The Holograms let me hear much deeper into the sound stage, revealing the softest of played notes, the movement of a drummer from one side of the kit to the other, or the quick back-and-forth of a slide guitar. All very intimate, but in no way analytical.
Imaging is underappreciated by many reviewers. A stance that would no doubt change should they experience a full set of Holograms!
Due to budget constraints, I replaced my ICs one- at- a- time. My prior ICs were carefully chosen after reading several excellent reviews on each- DH Labs Revelation, and PS Audio Transcendent Silver. The latter (and last to go) was on my mid/bass 3.5R Maggie panels.
Each time I replaced one of my ICs with a pair of Holograms, the soundstage and tonal qualities became more real. But, it was not until I completed the transition that the full Hologram magic revealed itself.
I was not prepared for what I am experiencing now. Right from the first note the Holograms were waaaay more open than the Transcendents, and within a hour they filled (fleshed) everything out.
Well recorded live music now sounds totally tactile, and palpable. I can actually sense the size of the venue, instrument, and the excitement of the audience.
MUSIC:
Brett Dennen's voice was crystal clear as though he was in the room singing song-after-song from So Much More.
Usher CD (not him, the speaker company) 6 Key Elements. This disc was a audio show giveaway several years ago. All the songs are exceptionally well recorded, not just tonally, but imaging, too. The opening cut is a large female choir. We all know how congested and edgy they can sound. Not now.
One of the cuts is a drum solo. I have heard it many times, but for the first time I felt like I was in front of the actual drums. Each drum or cymbal played was not just tonally correct, but the sound now came from the exact position where each was struck.
Dixie Chicks Takin' The Long Way A torture test on my system. Great music and musicianship, but it has always been difficult to listen to digitally. Much more involving now, but no miracles yet. That will have to wait for something like The Nova Physics Memory Player.
Finally, I am able to suspend disbelief and feel as though I am there, especially on high quality recordings.
Will Holograms make the same magic in your system? After 30 some years as an avid enthusiast, I am a big believer that cables make or break a system, but you need a system capable of high quality playback.
My source is the new Raysonic 228, a 2 box version of their 168. I use the variable tube outs into an active XO then into a Wyred 4 Sound MC 250/500 amp. Speaker Cables are Clear Day Holograms (double shotgun). Tek Line Cables Reference series power cords, PS Audio Premier Power Plant, and a dedicated 20 amp line. If your system is anywhere near this level (and IF you are hearing the music in the correct polarity), you should love what the Holograms will do.
Paul definitely got the name right- Hologram.
